Editor’s note: This is part one of a two-part series on emotionally driven consumers and their connection to quick-service restaurants. Part two will cover testing methodologies that empower emotional transparency. If you’ve ever overheard two people in the middle of a heated debate between thin-crust or deep-dish pizza, you understand there’s no doubt our relationship with food is deeply emotional. When consumers crave their favorite fast-food restaurant, they may be picturing a tantalizing burger and fries combo; however, their true […]

I was invited to a collaging party at a friend’s house recently. Crafting of any kind is pretty new to me, but I fell hard for the process of riffling through piles of magazines, old picture books, discarded catalogs and stacks of textured, printed papers. My contribution was a bunch of pressed autumn leaves and — no surprise — some snacks and beverages to sustain us while we snipped and chatted. I mention this because December, which starts tomorrow, is […]
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) – One thing many across the globe can agree on is their love for food. That’s what gathered SEMO students together on Tuesday in Cape Girardeau as they offered foods from their own countries as part of the International Education Week. Students we talked with said this is a great way to educate others on some of the culture from their home. “I would like for people to see our traditional food, our sweets,” Issra Mrad […]
kristine M. Kierzek Cooking is a continuum of care for Sara Crawley. Feeding others feeds her own needs, too. Crawley started out studying nursing, and while putting herself through school she worked in the restaurant industry. It quickly became clear to her that her path was meant to be in food. She attended Waukesha County Technical College’s culinary program, then worked her way through roles in restaurants and catering with Eddie Martini’s. Five years ago she took on the role […]
A new study indicates that eating a low-fat, vegan diet could decrease the risk of chronic illnesses like type 2 diabetes. The research was published in Dietary Science and Practice. It looked at the ways in which low-fat, plant-based foods impact body weight and composition, as well as insulin sensitivity. The 16-week study, conducted by Hana Kahleova and Neal D. Barnard, observed 244 overweight individuals assigned to either the intervention or control groups. The intervention group was prescribed a low-fat […]

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, if kept frozen, ground beef remains safe to cook and consume indefinitely, though it is at its best, taste and texture-wise, within four months. Fresh ground beef, on the other hand, is only at its best for about two or three days after purchase. What would the holidays be without jokes about fruitcake — that it’s leaden, dry and hard, better used as a doorstop or dumbbell than served as dessert? Every December, fruitcake’s loathsomeness is enshrined on greeting cards and in cartoons. The comedian Johnny Carson famously cracked that there was but one fruitcake in existence that’s passed around continuously from person to person. Fruitcake, in short, is an archetype of bad food. While it’s arguably appropriate to malign mass-produced fruitcakes — the […]
Canada needs to work to reduce food trade barriers. Ottawa–Half of the global population will depend on foreign countries for their food supply by 2050 and international markets must function better to keep them from going hungry, says Claire Citeau, Executive Director of the Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance (CAFTA). Currently international markets for food often function poorly because of trade-distorting subsidies and various forms of government protection, she told the Commons agriculture committee. Food export restrictions can be highly damaging […]
Here’s a quick quiz: What replaced the food pyramid, the government guide to healthy eating that stood for nearly 20 years? If you’re stumped, you’re not alone. More than a decade after Agriculture Department officials ditched the pyramid, few Americans have heard of MyPlate, a dinner plate-shaped logo that emphasizes fruits and vegetables. Only about 25% of adults were aware of MyPlate – and less than 10% had attempted to use the guidance, according to a study released Tuesday by […]
