Date: Thursday, 25 May 2023
Time: 4:30 to 6:30 pm (CEST)
Elimination of industrially produced trans fat from the global food supply by 2023 is a priority target for the World Health Organization (WHO). In May 2018, WHO released the REPLACE action framework to serve as a roadmap for countries to implement the prompt, complete and sustained elimination of industrially produced trans fat from the food supply. Five years into the REPLACE initiative, the deadline for worldwide trans fat elimination is upon us.
Trans Fat Free by 2023 – Global Progress toward the Target, a side event at the World Health Assembly convened by WHO and Resolve to Save Lives (RTSL) in partnership with the Access to Nutrition Initiative (ATNI), will call attention to the 2023 deadline and mobilize support from senior government stakeholders and food and beverage industry to accelerate progress on trans fat elimination.
The event will highlight 1) results of the WHO REPLACE initiative, including recent successes and the remaining agenda; 2) overall experience to date and the keys to success; 3) industry progress on eliminating industrially produced trans fat and related commitments, including highlights from the forthcoming report from WHO and ATNI on the International Food and Beverage Alliance’s trans fat reduction commitments; and 4) how WHO, RTSL, ATNI and other partners can support country actions.
The target audience for the event is representatives from countries, civil society organizations and other advocates, food industry and food industry advocates/groups.
The hybrid event will take place in-person at the Pavillon Gallatin – Domaine de Penthes in Geneva, Switzerland and online on the Resolve to Save Lives YouTube channel.
